How long does it take to renew a British passport in the USA?
Generally speaking, it should take from 3 to 4 weeks (renewals) to receive your new UK passport. However, with the current Covid-19 pandemic, you should bank on a few extra weeks in addition to the normal 3 to 4 weeks.
We do not recommend that you make travel arrangements if you have less than 6 months validity on your passport as you run the risk of not being allowed to travel when you reach the airport or go through immigration. Generally speaking, you should start your passport renewal process when you have 8 months left on your current passport.
Can you renew your UK passport while abroad?
Yes, it is possible to renew your UK passport whilst abroad. The only difference is that it will take slightly longer than if you were applying from within the UK, and there will be an additional cost for the courier fees.
When do I need to renew my British Passport?
We are often asked, ‘How long do I have to renew my British passport after it expires?’. In general, you should renew your passport if it has less than six months’ validity after the return date of your overseas trip; your passport needs to be valid for at least six months longer than your stay in a foreign country and must have at least 3 blank pages available.
Do I have to send my old UK passport when renewing?
Yes, you do need to send in your old or current British passport when renewing. Don’t worry, though, because it will be sent back to you in a separate courier to your new passport (in the unlikely event that one of them goes missing).
It is for this reason that we at U.K.ABROAD do not recommend making travel plans if your passport is due for renewal soon. If you need to travel in the near future and your English passport will be expiring soon, you should consider renewing it as soon as possible.

Replacing lost, stolen or damaged British Passports from the USA
How do I replace my lost British passport?
The first step is to report your lost British passport to the local police where you are. You will need to obtain a police report.
You may be required to provide certain supporting documentation or information to obtain a new UK passport and this often causes a bit of a delay in the application process. We therefore recommend that you plan on staying in place for an additional few days so that you can get all the documents you need and have plenty of time to apply for your new passport.
Other than that, the process is more or less the same as if you are applying for or renewing your British passport and the timeframe is also the same.
If you need to travel in the next few days, you will need to apply for an emergency travel document which functions in the same way as a passport.
How quickly can I replace a lost UK passport?
If you do not have imminent travel plans, you won’t need to apply for an emergency travel document and you can apply for a replacement passport.
It will take from 4 to 6 weeks to obtain your new passport. Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, it could take longer than this, depending on how busy Her Majesty’s Passport office is at the time.
How do I report a lost UK passport?
This is a 2-step process. If you suspect that your passport was stolen, you will need to notify your local police station and request an original police report.
If you need to travel in the next few weeks, there will not be enough time to apply for and receive a new UK passport. In this case, you will need to apply for an emergency travel document. This application can be done at the British Embassy, High Commission or Consulate in your area and it should only take a few working days.
It will need to be accompanied by your complete and intended travel itinerary, along with supporting documents (e.g. your confirmed airline tickets and any hotel reservations). Once received, you will only be able to travel according to the details on your emergency travel document. You will then need to apply for a standard British passport renewal from USA for your new passport.
