    They take all of the uncertainty and stress out of renewing a passport by carefully preparing you and guiding you through every step of the process. Their fee includes everything: the passport renewal cost, DHL courier charges to send your application pack to the UK, and delivery of your new passport – along with your original documents – back to you.

    They organise it all, even arranging for your documents to be collected from your home. Most of the process is done online, including uploading your passport photo, which U.K.ABROAD attaches to your application before submitting it on your behalf. The only physical documents you send are your current passport and any required supporting documents, such as a scan of another passport if you’re a dual citizen.

Why Gary is Eligible

Gary qualifies for a British passport because both of his parents were born in the UK and were married.

Timeline

  • Application submitted: 3 February
  • Documents received by HMPO: 25 February
  • Passport approved: 17 June
  • Passport delivered: 23 June

Documents Submitted

  • Gary’s dad’s original British passport (used for travel to the USA)
  • Full-colour photocopy of Gary’s valid USA passport (every page)
  • Gary’s original unabridged birth certificate
  • His mom’s and dad’s original unabridged birth certificates
  • His parents’ original unabridged marriage certificate
  • Letter explaining he travelled on his dad’s passport and does not have his late mother’s old passport

Unexpected Challenges

Despite clear eligibility through his UK-born parents, HM Passport Office (HMPO) requested a long list of extra documents, largely because Gary was born in Zimbabwe. These included:

  • All passports ever held by his father at the time of Gary’s conception
  • Antenatal records, hospital and birth documents from Zimbabwe
  • Childhood vaccination and school records from Zimbabwe
  • Extensive family photographs from birth to present, clearly labelled
  • Parents’ wedding photographs, also fully labelled
  • Written statements on any previous marriages and details of all siblings

Gary provided as much as possible, including printed photos and a detailed letter explaining gaps in documentation. Still, HMPO asked for even more — including two proofs of address, which is unusual for applications from the USA.

Final Hurdle: Interview

HMPO then required an interview, which Gary attended on 28 May.

Success at Last

Gary’s passport was finally approved on 17 June, and he received it by 23 June.
